Not Just for Holidays: Why Lower Hearson Farm Cottages Are Perfect for Life’s Practical Trips Too
We know that people often think of Lower Hearson Farm Cottages as a base for fun family holidays – and they’d be right. With large gardens to roam, friendly animals to meet, and a heated outdoor pool to splash in, it’s a great place to relax, play and reconnect.
But what you might not realise is that our cottages are just as suited to the practical trips life throws your way – whether that’s coming to North Devon for a family wedding, visiting loved ones nearby, viewing houses, or needing a home-from-home while your own is being worked on. We're not just for getaways – we're here when you need somewhere practical, comfortable and welcoming to stay.
Here’s how Lower Hearson can work brilliantly for all sorts of non-holiday stays.
A Handy Base for Visiting Family and Friends
Life can take you all over the place, and sometimes that means needing a comfortable spot to stay while you catch up with loved ones nearby. Lower Hearson Farm is ideally located for visiting Barnstaple, South Molton, Bishop’s Tawton, Landkey, and Swimbridge – all just a short drive away.
If you’ve got relatives in the area but want your own space in the evenings, we’re a perfect choice. With practical, well-equipped kitchens, plenty of space for little ones to run about, and flexible sleeping arrangements across our six cottages, you can dip in and out of family time as needed – without feeling like you’re camping out in someone’s spare room.
Here for Life Events: Weddings, Births, and Goodbyes
Big life moments often mean travel – and sometimes that travel needs a base that’s both comfortable and low-fuss.
Coming to North Devon for a wedding? We often welcome guests who are attending a ceremony nearby and want somewhere relaxed, private and self-contained to stay. You might be part of a wedding party needing space for multiple family members – or just a couple looking for an affordable place to get ready in peace before the big day.
If you’re welcoming a new grandchild or great-grandchild into the world, our cottages are a good solution for new parents who want time with extended family – without everyone being under one roof.
We also recognise that not all trips are joyful ones. If you need to be close to family for health reasons or bereavement, we offer a peaceful and supportive place to stay – without fanfare, but with everything you need.
House-Hunting? Stay with Us While You Look Around
Planning a move to North Devon? Lower Hearson is an excellent base while you view properties in the area.
We're tucked away in the countryside, but just 15 minutes from Barnstaple and 25 minutes from South Molton – making it easy to get to estate agents, house viewings, and the sort of wandering around villages that helps you decide where you'd like to live.
A few guests have even ended up buying or renting homes nearby after staying with us and falling in love with the area! Whether you’re just getting started or have a few houses lined up to view, staying in one of our cottages gives you a real sense of what life here is like – far more so than a hotel room ever could.
We can even offer flexible changeovers and short breaks at certain times of year to fit around your viewing schedule.
Working on Your Own House? Stay While the Builders Do Their Thing
If you're having building work done – an extension, new kitchen, or something that makes staying at home tricky – we can help. Our cottages are self-catering, family-friendly and some are pet-friendly too, making them ideal for temporary stays while your own place is out of action.
We know it’s not always easy being uprooted, so we aim to make things as smooth as possible. Our cottages are well equipped for everyday life, with decent WiFi, washing machines, comfy beds, and everything you need to cook a proper meal. And if you’re juggling work, school and keeping the dog walked – we get it. There's space here for all of that.
We’ve had families and couples stay during renovations – it’s a practical option that doesn’t feel like you’re living out of a suitcase.
Multiple Cottages? Great for Groups and Extended Stays
One of the advantages of staying at Lower Hearson is the flexibility. We have six cottages on site, sleeping between 2 and 7 people (plus infants in cots), and they can be booked individually or together.
If you're travelling in a group for a wedding, a family event, or to support an older relative, you can stay close together – but still have your own space. There’s plenty of shared outdoor space to gather in, and families often find it makes things easier than trying to coordinate rooms across different locations.
Still a Bit of a Break
Even when you’re here for practical reasons, Lower Hearson has a way of giving you a breather.
Maybe it’s watching the kids play in the garden while you enjoy a cup of tea. Or collecting eggs in the morning with our friendly chickens. Or the calm that comes from being surrounded by fields, but still close to everything you need.
We’re always here to help with anything you need, and that’s part of what makes staying with us so special.
