Welcome to Lower Hearson, a great destination for Home Education adventures. Whether you’re taking your first steps into deschooling or are a seasoned unschooler, there is something here for you in this special corner of North Devon. Our spacious, homely and well-equipped cottages mean you can spend time as a family: recharging, exploring and learning together.

As a Home Ed family we believe that learning is woven into every experience and that time spent outdoors can be both educational and therapeutic for young people. Playing and exploring in our grounds, splashing in the stream, searching in the undergrowth for minibeasts, birdwatching and feeding the animals all contribute to a rounded education and life.

There is plenty to offer both on site and in the local area for families who are more structured in their learning style. We have superfast Wi-Fi (Starlink) meaning you can access worksheets or your regular online lessons from your cottage. The area is great for trips and visits linked to a range of topics for all age ranges, you’ll be spoilt for choice, whether your focus is coastal habitats, local history, tourism, agriculture or animals.

With five cottages on-site, Lower Hearson is the ideal choice for organising trips with other home ed families, ensuring a vibrant and communal experience. Our year-round games room, featuring table tennis and table football, serves as a hub for fun and friendship building. Shared gardens and group animal feed sessions create a lively, social atmosphere, offering lots of opportunities for guests to connect and play together. For those visiting us between May half-term and early September, our heated outdoor swimming pool also beckons for refreshing dips.
